How to use emoticons without using the mouse?

I like to use the "Thumb Up"-Emoticon. But everytime I have to click the menu open, type "thumb" and click the desired emoticon. Once I used to just type "(y)" (was that Pidgin?) - that was so easy. I would be fine with "" or something like that, too. Is there currently a way to use emoticons without the above described click-type-click-procedure (click-scroll-click is no option 🤣)?
